How to Help

December 2005

A New Day Dawning?

By ACSI Eastern Canada Regional Director

On December 14, 2005 Crisis Consulting International (CCI) issued a special advisory to all mission organizations working in Haiti.  It reported that Haiti now has the highest kidnapping rate in the Western Hemisphere, 8-10 people a day.  The CCI advisory gave detailed instructions about how mission workers could hopefully keep out of harms way.

Serious troubles have come upon one of Haitiís best established and most influential Christian schools as well.  Long time principal of Quisqueya Christian School in Port au Prince, Joan Martineau, and some of her key executive staff members resigned recently and the school is in a significant state of upheaval.

Please pray for Quisqueya, for Christian workers throughout Haiti, and for the upcoming elections.  I wonder if all this chaos is evidence that the old Satanically inspired order of things is losing its grip and that thanks to the Lordís work in evangelism and Christian schooling a new day is about to dawn.  When it does, Haitians will need our help more than ever to give their children a firm life foundation through quality Christian schooling.

  • Eastern Canada member schools: 155 student and teacher packages have already been collected for shipping this year. Our goal is to send 2,500 packs by the end of June 2006.
  • Our base of support has expanded.  Several churches are now involved in preparing student packs and a few French language Roman Catholic schools have donated used childrenís literature, novels, atlases, and encyclopaedias.  If you can think of other potential supporters please let us know.

Toward the end of November we visited schools in the barreos (slums) and batteys (Haitian worker settlements) in the Dominican Republic. We wanted to explore the possibility of sending teams from our region to help Haitian teachers and students in the Dominican Republic Ė especially when it is too dangerous to send teams directly to Haiti. It looks very promising. One school in the Toronto area has already approached us about a related student mission trip.  We will keep you informed about further opportunities.
