Growing a Thriving Christian School: 6 Key Factors

By: Dr. Derrick Mueller

As I reflect on my journey of observing, reflecting, and studying Christian schools, I've identified six essential factors for their success: God, parents, teachers, churches, communities, and boards. Through research, analysis, and engagement with educators, I've gained a deeper understanding of Christian education’s intricacies. I firmly believe that when these six factors work together in harmony, Christian schools can thrive and fulfill their mission.

Christian educators are committed to providing a high-quality education, honoring God, and equipping students to serve Him. However, we know that growing a thriving Christian school requires more than just a strong academic program. It requires a holistic approach that engages multiple stakeholders and fosters a sense of community and partnership.

At ACSIEC, we have identified six key factors that are essential for the growth and development of a Christian school. These factors play a vital role in shaping the school's direction and ensuring its long-term success. Emphasizing the importance of each factor will not only strengthen our foundation but also empower us to move forward as a united and vibrant community. By focusing on these essential elements, we can nurture an environment that fosters spiritual growth, academic excellence, and a strong sense of community, paving the way for a thriving future for our school.

The God Factor

First and foremost, a deep commitment to God and His Word is the foundation upon which a Christian school is built. Unless the Lord builds the house, the builder’s labour in vain (Psalm 127:1). A strong commitment to God provides a clear sense of purpose and direction, guiding decision-making and shaping the school's culture.

The Parent Factor

Engaged and supportive parents are also essential for the growth and development of a Christian school. Parents are a child's first and most influential educators, and when they are actively involved in their child's education and the school’s life, they create a positive and collaborative learning environment. As Proverbs 22:6 reminds us, "Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old, they will not turn from it."

The Teacher Factor

Qualified, committed, and passionate teachers are the backbone of any school. When teachers are called to educate and disciple students, they create a positive and effective learning environment. As 2 Timothy 2:2 reminds us, "And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable people who will also be qualified to teach others."

The Church Factor

A strong partnership between the school and local churches is also vital for the growth and development of a Christian school. When schools and churches work together, they create a sense of community and support, enriching the spiritual life of students and staff. As Hebrews 10:24 reminds us, "Let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds."

In addition, a school that is deeply connected to and engaged with its local community creates opportunities for service, outreach, and partnership, enriching the educational experience. As Philippians 2:4 reminds us, "Each of you should look not only to your own interests but also to the interests of others."

The Board Factor

A governing board dedicated to the school's mission and values is essential for strategic leadership and oversight. By aligning decisions—whether financial, curricular, or administrative—with core principles, the board ensures that the school remains true to its foundational beliefs.

This commitment fosters an environment where educators thrive, students grow, and the community connects. Proverbs 16:21 highlights the importance of wise leadership, reminding us that discerning hearts makes thoughtful decisions, while gracious words enhance understanding.

Such leadership creates a culture of respect and collaboration, empowering everyone in the school community to contribute to a shared mission. Ultimately, this commitment not only enriches the educational experience but also strengthens community bonds, paving the way for a brighter future.

Establishing a successful Christian school requires a comprehensive approach that engages various stakeholders while fostering community and collaboration. By concentrating on six key factors—God, parents, teachers, churches, communities, and boards—we can grow forward and build a strong foundation for growth and development. At ACSIEC, we are dedicated to supporting and equipping Christian schools in Eastern Canada, and we invite you to join us on this journey.
