Peoples Christian Academy (PCA) is seeking a Maintenance Technician & Caretaker to facilitate the school’s growth and development.

General Description
As a Maintenance Technician & Caretaker (MTC), the ideal candidate will play an important role in maintaining the school’s physical environment and ensuring a safe and conducive atmosphere for learning and working. Reporting to the Facilities Supervisor, the MTC will be responsible for a range of maintenance tasks, custodial duties, and facility upkeep.

Duties and Responsibilities
In the role of Maintenance Technician & Caretaker at Peoples Christian Academy (PCA) Inc., the individual is responsible for providing crucial support to classroom teachers, addressing their specific needs and desires within defined parameters set by the Business Manager and Facility Supervisor. The emphasis is on approaching tasks with efficiency and timeliness, minimizing operational impact on classroom activities. This encompasses a diverse range of responsibilities, including routine and preventive maintenance tasks such as plumbing, electrical work, carpentry, painting, HVAC, and assembly/installation projects. Clear communication of facility concerns and compliance with testing requirements are paramount.

The role extends to the exterior maintenance of the building and grounds, ensuring cleanliness and order. Simultaneously, as a custodial services contributor, the individual diligently maintains a clean and safe school environment. Collaboration with the Facilities Supervisor and the team is essential for prioritizing and coordinating maintenance tasks. Additionally, effective communication about maintenance or repair needs is crucial. Qualifications
Typically the required knowledge, skills and abilities are obtained through successful completion of Grade (12) twelve coupled with training and/or life experience performing similar facility maintenance technician and caretaking (custodial/maintenance) functions in comparable environments and demonstrated progressively responsible experience coordinating and/or supervising caretaking work is expected.

Specific Knowledge, Skills and Attributes
  • Proven experience in facilities maintenance or a related field, with a strong working knowledge of general repair tasks, plumbing, electrical, and carpentry work.

  • Demonstrated knowledge and ability in standard cleaning practices and procedures, equipment and products including safe handling and storage of cleaning agents.

  • Knowledge of and ability to follow required Occupational Health and Safety as outlined in the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulation, regulations pertaining to Workplace Hazardous Materials Information Systems (WHMIS) and School policies and procedures.

  • Ability to communicate effectively in English and the ability to understand, carry out and clearly obtain as well as convey oral and written instructions to others.

  • Ability to work independently with minimal on-site supervision demonstrating sound judgment and decision-making skills to ensure quality of one’s own work.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships in a courteous and friendly manner with staff, students, trade partners and the public.

  • Ability to receive and implement feedback on one’s performance knowing that any such feedback is intended for the good of the individual, custodian team, school staff, and school community.

  • Ability to conduct oneself in a manner appropriate to a school including demonstrating strict attention to confidentiality of school operations and student information.

  • Ability to perform standard caretaking and minor maintenance duties including: standing, walking, carrying, bending, stooping, climbing; to work at heights when changing light bulbs; and lifting (exerting up to 50 lbs. of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 lbs. of force frequently, and/or up to 10 lbs. of force constantly to move objects).

Salary/Wages
This is a salaried position based on an annual contract commencing September 1 and running through to August 31. Compensation is paid in 12 equal payments unless otherwise mutually rearranged. Salary and benefits are applied as per School compensation policy.  The compensation for the MTC role is $25 per hour, based on a standard workday of 7.5 hours over 5 days a week, equating to an annual salary of $48,750. Two (2) weeks of paid vacation for each entitlement year for the first five (5) years of employment, plus one (1) week during the Christmas Break and one (1) week during the March Break.
